About

Hi, I'm Tanya.

Many of the people I work with are used to being the strong one — caring, capable, and resilient, but quietly exhausted from carrying everyone else's needs while neglecting their own. Together, we explore the patterns that keep you stuck and build practical ways toward a life that feels more aligned, sustainable, and authentic.

As a South Asian immigrant, I've experienced firsthand what it feels like to navigate multiple cultures, competing expectations, and the pressure to hold everything together for everyone around you. My path into this work began long before graduate school — so this isn't just professional for me, it's personal.

Professionally, I bring over a decade of experience in mental health, addictions, and frontline support, with an integrative, trauma-informed approach that draws on ACT, CBT, IFS, and DBT. You'll find my full credentials and training below.

Credentials & training

  • Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), MACP — CRPO #19187
  • Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology
  • Concurrent Disorder Certificate (CAMH / Confederation College)
  • Opioid Use Disorder Treatment Certificate (CAMH)
  • Boundary Specialist Trained (PESI)

Practising under the clinical supervision of Sarah A. Spencer, M.C., R.P., C.C.C., CRPO #003437

How I work

Evidence-based tools, human-centered care

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. My practice is integrative — I pull the best tools from various modalities to fit your specific needs.

Cultivating Mindfulness & Self-Compassion

Mindfulness & Compassion-Focused Approaches

Learn how to slow down, tune into your needs, and relate to yourself with greater kindness. Together, we'll practice being present, reducing self-criticism, and creating space for rest, balance, and self-acceptance.

Handling Difficult Thoughts

ACT-informed

Learn how to respond differently to difficult thoughts rather than getting stuck fighting them. Together, we'll focus on what matters most to you and build a life that feels more aligned with your values.

Building Healthier Boundaries

DBT-informed

Develop practical skills for emotional regulation, boundary-setting, communication, and navigating difficult situations. The goal is not perfection, but feeling more confident and grounded in everyday life.

Understanding Yourself with Compassion

IFS-informed

Explore the different parts of yourself that may be carrying pain, self-criticism, people-pleasing, or protective patterns. Therapy can help you understand yourself with greater clarity, curiosity, and self-compassion.

Breaking Unhelpful Patterns

CBT-informed

Identify the thought patterns, behaviours, and habits that keep you feeling stuck. We'll work on developing healthier ways of responding to stress, anxiety, and life's challenges.

Questions

Things people often wonder

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit. If something feels stuck, heavy, or worth understanding better, that's reason enough. The free consult is a good, low-stakes way to find out.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a chance for us to get to know one another. We'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy, your goals, and any questions you may have. There's no pressure to share everything at once.

How long will I need to come?

It varies. Some people come for a few focused months; others value longer-term support. We'll check in regularly so therapy lasts exactly as long as it's useful to you — no longer.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. What you share stays between us, within the legal and ethical limits I'll explain clearly in our first session.

Do you accept insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans cover Registered Psychotherapy services. Direct receipts are provided for reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so I recommend checking with your provider directly.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Secure video sessions are available to residents anywhere in Ontario, held over a private, PHIPA-compliant platform — just as effective for most people as meeting in person. In-person sessions are offered at the Thunder Bay office.

What if we're not the right fit?

That's completely okay and more common than you'd think. Fit matters enormously, and I'm always glad to help point you toward someone who may suit you better.
